Thumb Pushing Knife

Good lord! Where do we even begin with this crazy iPhone case? With the list of its capabilities I guess, and maybe a video of it (literally) screwing around.

And now that list I promised you:

  • 2.5” knife with 0.75” of serrations
  • 1.8” Sawblade
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Large flathead screwdriver
  • Medium Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • 6 metric Allen wrenches
  • Wire stripper
  • 120mm ruler (110mm on iPhone 4/4s)
  • Bottle opener
  • Kickstand

Yes, a kickstand — what every smartphone needs.

The TaskOne is an iPhone case crossed with a Leatherman (or other multitool). It packs pretty much everything you might need for casual and not-so-casual repairs, including a wire cutter and a steak knife (for repairing your hunger).

But why? A multitool is clearly very useful to have with you at all times. And so is the iPhone. But that doesn’t mean they should be combined. Plenty of other things are useful, but we don’t feel the need to turn them into one single gadget? Do we combine a corkscrew with a wine glass? Can you buy a dog kennel that also works as a microwave? Does anyone make an iPad stand that doubles as a sex toy? Wait, they do?.

It reminds me of the days when every gadget had to be “credit-card-sized,” even if that was wildly inappropriate, only now your gadget has to somehow fit into an iPhone case.

The makers say that the tools are designed to break before your iPhone would be damaged by their use (kind of a weird guarantee), but you will still be twisting and wrenching the iPhone around next to hard metal objects, with no protection for the screen.

The TaskOne is currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, and you can pitch $ 75 for the “early bird special” or $ 90 for the full-price option. Or you could spend that $ 90 on a Leatherman and keep it in a completely separate pocket from your iPhone, just like a sane person would.
