Broken-Nintendo-DS

Handheld games consoles like the Nintendo 3DS and the Sony PlayStation Vita have long been suffering at the hands of smartphones and tablets. But the latest data from IDC and App Annie should give handheld game developers — including Nintendo — something to really think about.

While consumer spending on Android and iOS continued to rise during the first quarter of 2013, it fell considerably on handhelds.

Since the dawn of the App Store, and by extension, gaming on smartphones and tablets, one iconic brand has remained absent from the revolution: Nintendo. Perhaps the most beloved and historically innovative game maker in the world will have nothing to do with the idea of Super Mario Bros. for iOS.

The daring decision to not ride the success of the App Store is starting to come at a cost. Nintendo is  [Read More...]

Hell Invaders

American McGee’s Spicy Horse Games (Akaneiro, Alice: Madness Returns) revealed its new real time strategy (RTS) digital collectible card game today, tentatively titled Hell Invaders.

It’s set to release on Mac, iPad, PC and Linux sometime this coming Fall, and it looks like a weird cross between Diablo and Magic: The Gathering. Instead of cards moving toward each other with animation, the actual monsters on the cards fight it out  [Read More...]

Namco-Idolmaster

Namco Bandai’s Idolm@ster series has been exclusive to Japan since it first debuted in 2005, so you’ve probably never heard of it, despite their popularity. The only problem is, they’re priced at $ 54.99 each!

roguelikes

An infinitely deep and replayable world of RPG gaming awaits.

If you love to game, and you’ve never played a roguelike, shame on you. You can hardly call yourself a gamer at all.

Born in the era of computing in which games were played on cathode-ray terminals tethered to massive, churning mainframes, Rogue was an attempt to replicate in a single player, ASCII environment the experience of playing Dungeons & Dragons  [Read More...]

The U.K.’s Office of Fair Trading is investigating children’s games that charge in-app purchases for additional content and virtual items. The watchdog will look at games on mobile and on the web, and it’s calling for parents to report titles that “aggressively push” in-app purchases to children.

The OFT hopes to identify games that are “misleading, commercially aggressive or otherwise unfair” when promoting the ability to purchase extra items, such as additional levels and characters,  [Read More...]

You should be dancin', yeah.

You should be dancin’, yeah.

I’m sitting here bobbin’ my head to these fresh playlists, straight outta Liberty City, Chinatown, Vice City, and other locations in Rockstar’s flagship series of games, Grand Theft Auto.

Looks good, right?

Looks good, right? Just wait.

I’ve spent some time in Evoland, today, and I have to say I’m impressed. It’s more story than game, though there are all the trappings (pun intended) of the games many of us grew with baked right in. It’s a delight to play through, mostly because many of the older game mechanics, like turn-based fighting and random map encounters, don’t last too long.

It’s like  [Read More...]
