Message Box

Chat Heads. They made their grand debut in Facebook Home for Android, and Facebook added them later to its official iOS app. Now they are venturing out of Facebook’s iPhone app and into the rest of iOS, thanks to a jailbreak developer.

Unlike traditional inbox messaging, Cheat Heads are little bubbles for individual conversations that float around the screen. On Android, they can appear on top of any app systemwide and  [Read More...]

Not too long ago, there were a couple of iMessage service outages. When that happened, I (and many other folks, I bet) wasn’t able to send out my iMessages. The little red exclamation point would show up, mockingly, and I waited for the service to go back online to send them again.

Luckily, there is a way to easily turn that iMessage into a regular SMS text message, thereby avoiding any service  [Read More...]

iBookstore-NSFW-tweet

Apple works hard to ensure that inappropriate content doesn’t end up in the wrong hands, and it has strict ratings and approval processes for content distributed through the App Store, the iBookstore, and the iTunes Store. But it would seem the Cupertino company isn’t quite as careful with its social media accounts.

On Sunday night, Apple’s official iBookstore account on Twitter retweeted a lewd message that would certainly get a 17+ rating from  [Read More...]

Repeat Alerts

One of the wacky things you may notice if you’ve just gotten a new iPhone is the default double alert whenever you get a text message, whether iMessage or SMS. Why Apple has this as the default, I’m not sure, but it kept freaking me out before I figured out how to turn it off.

However, I’m willing to see that you might want the double alert, or more (shudder), and  [Read More...]

It’s winter. It’s probably cold where you live. Running outside to start your car is probably one of the most dreadful experiences you have every morning, and then you gotta sit in your cold car for a few minutes before the heat really kicks in. You’re shivering. Trying to drive faster. And it all just sucks.

You could buy one of those remote ignitions, but then you gotta carry around an  [Read More...]

Turn Off Repeating Text Message Alerts on iPhone

The default iOS setting for iPhones is for message alerts to chime with the text tone twice, in a two minute interval. While the repeat text message alert sounds, notifications, and vibrations on the iPhone can be helpful for some people, those of us who are basically glued to our phones tend to experience quite the opposite and end up finding the repetitive alerts a nuisance, since it can seem like you’re being inundated with texts when you’re not. We’ll  [Read More...]

Reply to an incoming phone call with a text message

The iPhone gained a handy feature with iOS 6 that allows you to quickly respond to an incoming phone call with a preset text message. This is a perfect solution if you’re busy in a meeting, classroom, driving, or in any other situation where you can’t take a phone call, but the caller is important enough to let them know they’ll be contacted  [Read More...]

Send an iMessage as a text message

iMessage is undeniably great, but it’s not without it’s own set of problems (coincidentally, at the time of writing, iMessage happens to be down), and even when it is working there are times when trying to send a message through iMessage is slower than text messages, or they won’t deliver at all because of a poor cell signal. If you’ve ran into the latter problem before  [Read More...]

Custom screen saver text in Mac OS X

The most simple screen saver in OS X is just a floating grey Apple logo  against a black background, but you can make that screen saver significantly better by attaching a customized message to it, which will be added along with the logo and move about the screen.

Older versions of Mac OS X referred to this customizable screen saver as “Computer Name”, but  [Read More...]

Drag and drop a file into Mail for instant mail attachment

Surely everyone knows by now that you can drag and drop files directly into Mail messages to attach those files to an email, but did you know you can instantly create a new email with an attachment by dragging the file in question to Mail’s Dock icon instead?

Try it out, drag any file directly into the Mail icon. You’ll immediately  [Read More...]
