New Apple Patent Could Spell Trouble For Some Ultrabook Manufacturers

Apple’s patent arsenal continues to grow, and a recently awarded patent could hurt other Ultrabook manufacturers. Asus, Acer Cut MacBook Air Competing Ultrabook Orders By 40%

Acer and Asus have cut order for their MacBook Air competing Ultrabooks by as much as 40 percent according to Digitimes. The report cites struggling sales as the reason for the cuts. Both Acer and Asus anticipated ordering as many as 300,000 Ultrabooks by the end of 2011. But, with first-month sales of Windows-based Ultrabooks reportedly “unsatisfactory” producers cut orders to between 150,000 and 180,000 units according to Digitimes who cited sources at design manufacturers. Ultrabook Makers ‘Testing Waters’ Against iPad and MacBook Air

Unsure of how Intel’s “Ultrabook” laptops will compete with the iPad and MacBook Air, manufacturers are “testing the water” by ordering less than 50,000 units for later this month. Intel Unveils ‘UltraBook’ Design Wants to Compete with iPad and MacBook Air

Intel and announcements at the Computex trade show were similar to a two-year-old learning their first words. You couldn’t get them to shut up. Intel’s proposed “Ultrabooks” would combine the performance capabilities of a laptop with “tablet-like features” in a “thin, light, and elegant design” according to Executive VP Sean Maloney.
